Mississippi Prom Cancelled To Prevent Lesbian Student From Bringing a Female Date

Okay, this is seriously not cool:

A Mississippi county school board announced Wednesday it would cancel its upcoming prom after a gay student petitioned to bring a same-sex date to the event. “Due to the distractions to the educational process caused by recent events, the Itawamba County School District has decided to not host a prom at Itawamba Agricultural High School this year,” school board members said in a statement.

“Distractions”? Is that what they’re calling it now? According to Slog.thestranger.com: “The school told Constance McMillen, an 18-year-old senior, that she couldn’t bring a female date, couldn’t arrive with another girl, couldn’t wear a tuxedo, and warned her that even if she and her girlfriend arrived separately and wore dresses, they would be asked to leave if their presence made other students “uncomfortable.”” That sounds pretty much like an excuse for bigotry to me…

You can find details of people to contact here and a Facebook support page here, if you want to send a strongly worded letter and/or show your support. This sort of thing is ridiculous and really needs to stop.
