Teaser Tuesday (May 25)

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  • Grab your current read
  • Open to a random page
  • Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
  • Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

Today’s excerpt is from a graphic novel I recently finished. It’s a little difficult to quote from, but it was really amazing so I thought I’d give it a try:

Panel 1
CAPTION: We had here a little comfortable…we had where to sit.
ANJA: Remember, little one, never tell anybody there are Jews here. They’ll shoot us all.
LITTLE BOY: Yes, Aunt Anja.
CAPTION: The little boy was very smart, and he loved very much Anja.

Panel 2
ART: You had to pay Mrs. Motonowa to keep you, right?
VLADEK: Of course I paid…and well I paid.

Panel 3
VLADEK: …What you think? Someone will risk their life for nothing?

— p.144, Maus I by Art Spiegelman

I chose this section, rather than opening the book randomly, because it was so haunting. There’s something about the whole book that sticks with you more than most Holocaust stories, I think. I’ll have a review of it up later today.

  1. I agree, it does sound haunting. We’ll have to check it out. Thanks for sharing and for visiting my blog!
